My Little Pony Project Opens Tonight at TAG

May 5th marks the launch of the My Little Pony Project 2012 art exhibition, curated by Sweet Streets, and pop-up shop with a dazzling opening night celebration at Toy Art Gallery. Twenty-five notable artists have created their own one-of-a-kind painted My Little Pony 18-inch vinyl figures. The customized ponies will be available for sale during the run of the exhibition, ending May 26, 2012. Ten percent of the sales from the My Little Pony one-of-a-kind ponies will be donated to Give Kids The World.

Shojono Tomo for My Little Pony Project Reveal

The concept behind Shojono Tomo’s My Little Pony Project pony is something like a transformer. Tomo adorned her pony with plastic toys including a bulldozer representing a unicorn’s horn, curlers and legoes as wings, and a trail of items in her tail. Painted onto her body is a ballerina dancer and large anime eyes. Nicknamed “Child Play”, an idea often explored in Shojono Tomo’s work, her pony’s accessories are mobile making her an interactive piece of art. Shojono Tomo also created a 1-of edition print. Chikuwaemil for My Little Pony Project Reveal

Chikuwaemil’s pony for My Little Pony Project is one of the most detailed in the bunch. Her pony is detailed with a collage of characters including cats and flowers, coated in a clear lacquer. She has signature anime eyes with pink eyelashes and a lace bow, Chikuwaemil’s favorite fabric. Chikuwaemil’s pony, named “Precious” is $1,000 with proceeds benefitting Give Kids The World. “Precious” also appears in her original painting of the same name. Eimi for My Little Pony Project Reveal

Eimi’s pony for My Little Pony Project was photographed and revealed today. She was painted with the same acrylic and colored pencil mixed media as her artwork, detailed with false eyelashes. Artwork by Eimi for 323East’s Lyric, Opening Tonight

Eimi will participate in Lyric, 323East’s music-inspired group show curated by Glenn Barr. She joins a roster that includes Sweet Streets artists Chikuwaemil and Luke Chueh. Artists were asked to paint the same size as an LP record cover. Eimi chose to create an imaginary record cover featuring her characters. Lyric opens tonight at 323East and runs until May 13th.

Chikuawemil took some photos of her My Little Pony in progress. Her pony, named Precious, is an 18″ inch tall My Little Pony made special for the My Little Pony Project. Proceeds of Chikuwaemil’s charity pony will benefit Give Kids the World. Her pony shares the same elements as her art, from the bright colors to frenzied textures and lace bib. My Little Pony Project launches May 5th at Toy Art Gallery.

Nicki Minaj Wears Shojono Tomo Tee to Elvis Duran

Nicki Minaj visited Elvis Duran & The Z100 Morning Show at Z100 Studio today in New York City. She is wearing a shirt made special for her by Shojono Tomo.
